English Literary Contest

Date:
2012

Summary:
For 45 years, the English Department of the College of General Studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus has held an English literary contest for students enrolled in its courses. The primary goal of the contest is to recognize student creativity and effective use of English, which for most students is their second language. Since the late 1960s, thousands of students have submitted their original work and many have been inspired to pursue further English language studies and nurture their writing talent.

During the second semester of each academic year, students submit their entries. Ninety-nine entries were received last year. Three groups of three university English professors judge the anonymous entries in each category. First, second and third prizes are awarded for each category. Judges focus on quality of content, creativity, organization and language use. The literary contest ceremony is usually held in April of each year. Students receive monetary prizes which vary according to funds available.

The English Department and the contest winners are pleased to see the fruits of their efforts made available to the public through the UMBRAL platform.
